Do you have enough?
Some people will never have enough.
King Tantalus committed the sin of revealing the secrets of the Gods. Zeus punished the naughty king by condemning him to stand in a pool of water in the underworld, forever forbidden to eat or drink.
Whenever he bent to slake his thirst, Hades’ waters retreated, riven by hunger; all he could do was to reach for, but never touch, fruit that he could never eat. In other words, Zeus was a big tease.
From King Tantalus’ punishment, we get the word TANTALIZE, to torment someone with the sight or promise of an unattainable thing.
One of my literary mentors, Kurt Vonnegut, attended a party thrown by a billionaire. Joseph Heller, the author of Catch-22, was also in attendance. Kurt said something to him, which, frankly, I thought was uncharacteristically nasty. Vonnegut commented that the billionaire made more in a quick time than any amount of money Joseph Heller would ever possess from his great books.
Heller replied, “Yeah, but I have something he’ll never have. Enough.”
Food for thought.
